In Archeofoss 2020, Michele Pellegrino and Donato Coppola presented their analysis on Prehistoric engravings and graffiti, like proper artistic events, which are fundamental to understand characters of the graphemic-symbolic system shared by groups of hunter-gatherers of paleo-mesolithic culture (see the abstract in https://zenodo.org/record/4002961#.YHgzlOgzaUk).
The use of graphic and photographic surveying techniques has enriched the knowledge of paleo-mesolithic culture. With the support of current digital methodologies and applications, the analysis of "grammar of signs" of prehistoric age has turned from the interactive investigation of objects to the variation of the lighting conditions. This new approach takes into account the overall vision of the “plastic values” that take the individual signs in relation by support.
The case study shown in this presentation was the Grotta di Santa Maria di Agnano (Ostuni, BR – Italy). The authors implemented the monocular vision of the digital microscope high resolution photographic documentation by integrating high resolution, calibrated photographic documentation on the technique for image acquisition and processing (Reflectance Transformation Imagining (RTI), using open-source software.
The aim is to modify the lights on the artifact and optimize an improved method that maximizes the sharpness of the image, but, at the same time, preserves the diffused brightness, ensuring an enhanced general perception of the form and particular details, increasing the amount of recordable data to be examined.
